January seems to be the time when I embark on all kinds of self-improvement schemes. Despite the timing, they don’t really have anything to do with New Year’s resolutions, per se. Instead, I think these plans come about because I’m trapped in my house for most of the winter and have time to dwell on my shortcomings.

Anyway, my latest effort at self-improvement involves taking math classes! I have forgotten all about Algebra, and was never any good at geometry or trigonometry. I might have taken a pre-calculus course in college and a statistics class or two, but there again, I remember nothing. I want to start with Algebra and work my way through several courses just so I understand what’s going on.

So now I’m looking at Online Colleges that offer these classes at reasonable prices. I just need to “audit” the classes or take them on a pass/fail basis. I don’t want to deal with actually enrolling in a school and getting grades or whatever, so we’ll see how that goes.

I’m obviously too late to start the winter semester, but maybe spring or summer would work!

Resolution for 2012

I don’t like to make resolutions because I rarely ever stick to them anyway. Plus, I like to think that if I need improvement in some area, I would address it right away instead of waiting until the start of a New Year.

Nevertheless, I have come up with one resolution for 2012. I’d like to volunteer more. I want to spend at least one hour per week working for a cause that I find important. I don’t have to volunteer for the same place every week or anything like that, but I do want to help in this manner instead of simply donating money all the time.

Let’s see if I can do this!

Christmas shopping

I’ve spent most of the day Christmas shopping for my family. Usually I would have everything done by now, but I got a pretty late start this year. Of course, Christmas shopping just means sitting at my computer and ordering stuff online, which is 1000x easier than dealing with traffic and an overcrowded mall.

Still, it does take time to comparison shop at a bunch of different places, look for online coupons to use, etc. so I’m a bit tired now. Off to take a quick nap before getting dinner ready!

Fond memories

I was up bright and early this morning and had a real taste for some fast food breakfast, so I went out to get a couple of sandwiches and some hash browns. As I was at the drive-thru window, I noticed that the cashier was using an Aldelo System register – the exact machine I used when I used to work at a fast food place while putting myself through college.

Normally, people wouldn’t associate a “McJob” with good times, but I had a blast because my coworkers and manager were just awesome. We had so much fun with each other every single day that it didn’t feel like work, not even when disgruntled customers started complaining about every little thing.

I haven’t had too many fun jobs in my life, so that one definitely stands out. I lost touch with everyone after I left, but I’m REALLY tempted to look them up on Facebook now!

Hosting kids

Since I didn’t have much going on today, I let my son invite a group of friends over to play Wii and other video games. I’m usually always working, so it’s rare for my son to have a chance to play with his friends over here. I’ve got to say, it was fun having so much energy and enthusiasm in here! Aside from the mass of shoes kicked off carelessly by the door and all the book bags flung in a pile by the couch (they brought extra controllers and whatnot) the boys were well-behaved and got along nicely. No arguments or tears, so I’d call this a successful play date!

Slow weekend

I’m usually very busy on the weekends because I have to catch up on all the stuff I neglected to do during the week. But it looks like I’ll have a ton of free time this weekend. Heck, the Bears aren’t even playing on Sunday, which gives me three extra hours right there!

I’ll probably use this time to finish a couple of books that I’m in the middle of. One bad thing about having a Kindle is that it gives me reading ADD. It’s so easy to switch back and forth between books that I’ve got like 5 of them going at once. I need to just finish what I start instead of skipping around like that!

Scrapbooking

I’m thinking of taking up scrapbooking as a hobby. I was at a friend’s house the other day, and she totally wowed me with all her scrapbooks. What a fantastic (and fun) way to preserve photos, wedding invitations, graduation announcements, and all the other mementos that we accumulate over the course of a lifetime.

I’m not really an arts and crafts kind of person, but I think I could get into something like scrapbooking because I really love these kinds of keepsakes.
