I’m not a huge music fan in general, but there are certain bands that stand out in my mind because they were so much a part of my life at one point. An example of this is Nirvana. They were popular in the early ’90s, exploding on the scene during my junior year of high school and continuing until Kurt’s suicide in my sophomore year of college.
Nirvana was played constantly back then, especially on my college radio station, so a lot of my memories and experiences from that time are tied up with specific songs from Nevermind and In Utero. For instance, today I was playing around on YouTube and eventually landed on the Lithium video. Man, that brought on some intense flashbacks!
I listened to Nirvana so much all throughout the ’90s that I eventually got sick of all their songs… except for Lithium. The lyrics are just so awesome that I never get tired of them:
“I’m so happy ’cause today
I found my friends
They’re in my head.
I’m so ugly,
But that’s OK, ’cause so are you
We’ve broken our mirrors.
Sunday morning is everyday for all I care
And I’m not scared
Light my candles, in a daze
‘Cause I found God
Yeah, yeah, yeah…”
What a sad day when I heard that Kurt committed suicide. I remember exactly where I was, what I was doing, and who told me. It was that much of a defining moment in my life — and remember, I’m not even much of a music fan!
