I haven’t been following the 2008 Supercross series too closely this year, but I just saw some highlights from last Saturday’s race and was amazed at how close the SX East Lites title chase was! Rookie Trey Canard edged out defending champ Ryan Villopoto with an amazing ride in St. Louis to finish out a fantastic season. In doing so, he becomes the first rookie since 1999 to win a SX championship, when Ernesto Fonseca did it for Yamaha of Troy.
The great finish to the East Coast series got me thinking of the tight championship battle in the West Coast series and the Supercross class as well. In the SX West Lites, Jason Lawrence leads Ryan Dungey by just six points with one round to go. And in the Supercross class, Chad Reed currently holds a 13-point edge over Kevin Windham with two rounds to go.
I would love to see Dungey come back and win the title, but I couldn’t find any cheap flights to Seattle (the site of the next round) at this late date, so I guess I’ll have to settle for listening to the webcast of the race. Bummer!
This is the first year in a long time that I haven’t attended a SX event in person. What a year to miss out on all the fun
