Giants Win!!!

manningtrophy.jpg The New York Giants just got done pulling off one of the biggest upsets in all of sports as they defeated the New England Patriots by a score of 17-14 in Super Bowl XLII. The Giants’ D kept the game close, and then the offense came on strong when it counted in the 4th Quarter.

Trailing 14-10 with 2:39 remaining in regulation, the Giants started their final drive from their own 17 yard line. Quarterback Eli Manning made some spectacular plays on the drive, including an unbelievable 32-yard completion to David Tyree after it looked like Manning was going to get sacked.

Four plays later, Manning found Plaxico Burress in the end zone on a beautifully thrown 13-yard fade with just :35 left in the game.

The Patriots had one last gasp at getting into position for a tying field goal, but Tom Brady threw three incompletions and was sacked once, ending New England’s perfect season.

Super Bowl XLII Halftime Thoughts

Wow, what a game so far! It looks like the Giants definitely came to play, and I’m definitely happy to see that!

It’s 7-3 Patriots at the half, but the Giants have dominated almost every aspect of the game so far. Of course, only the points matter in the end, so if the Giants don’t start finishing off their drives, the Pats will still come away with the win.

The Giants D was all over Tom Brady in the first half, and he ended up with something like 82 yards on 8 completions, which is not on par with his stats from the regular season. I’m surprised at how conservative the Pats playcalling has been, with only a couple of shots downfield at Randy Moss.

I expect the Patriots to make tons of adjustments in the second half, and don’t think the Giants will be nearly as dominant in the latter stages. In other words, it’s still going to be an uphill battle for NY as they try to pull off a major upset here. They’ve got to limit their penalties, turnovers, and mistakes, and that offense has got to find a way to get into the end zone. After all, on the other side, a Brady-to-Moss connection can happen at any time to blow the game wide open.

Let’s hope the second half is just as exciting as the first!
