By now you’ve probably heard that motorcycle daredevil Evel Knievel died yesterday at the age of 69. He had been suffering from a variety of health ailments, including diabetes and pulmonary fibrosis, so his passing wasn’t altogether unexpected. Still, it’s kind of sad to see an icon from my childhood go like this.
My brother was a huge Evel Knievel fan back when we were kids, and even though I wasn’t into motorcycles at that time, I couldn’t help but admire the guy as well. His jumps were absolutely amazing, and his crashes were even more spectacular. It’s said that Evel broke almost every bone in his body at one time or another, so I guess he’s lucky that he survived his jumping career at all. Several news stations have been showing highlights of his jumps, and honestly, I can’t believe that he survived them all!
I wonder what Evel thought of the modern brand of motorcycle daredevil, the Travis Pastranas and Carey Harts of the world…. I happen to think they’re all crazy!
