Creative Zen Vision W

Creative Zen Vision W I’m looking to buy a new MP3 player to replace my first generation iPod Nano. I’m not having any problems with my Nano or anything like that; it’s just full now (I only went with the 4GB version) and I need to expand. I don’t need massive amounts of disk space because I can’t foresee ever filling up 60 or 80GB, ya know? I’m also leaning towards an MP3 player that can handle video — which lots of them seem to be able to do these days.

I’ve only ever owned iPods, but I really want to try a brand other than Apple this time around. Plus, as far as video iPods go, I’ve read that unless you buy vids directly from iTunes, it’s really a PITA to convert files so they can play on iPods. I don’t want to go through all that hassle, which is why I’m looking at other brands.

After reading some preliminary reviews, I think the Creative Zen Vision W sounds pretty good. I’m looking at the 30GB model (pictured above, click thumbnail to enlarge), which retails on Amazon.com for $269.99. It has a nice wide screen (4.3 inches), can handle avi, divx, xvid, and mpeg videos, and of course can handle songs and photos as well.

This product compares favorably to the 30GB iPod with Video, which has just a 2.5-inch screen and costs a whopping $489.62 through an Amazon seller.

In reading the customer reviews on Amazon.com, it seems that most people who bought the Vision W really like it. They praise the amazing picture quality and the ease of use, but say that the player is rather bulky and heavy compared to iPods.

A few people have had major problems with the Creative Lab software used to upload songs to the player, saying that the software freezes mid-transfer and everything has to be reset.

Hmmm. Personally, I’m past caring about the “cool” factor associated with iPods, which is why I’m willing to try a different brand. But at the same time, iPod and iTunes are proven winners, know what I mean? I’d hate to spend close to $300 on a Vision W only to have the same problems that other consumers have had.

What do you think? Do you have any personal experience with Creative Zen products? Let me know!
