Eyewear from Optics Planet

I have a terrible habit of carrying my glasses around without a case, so it should come as no surprise that I ended up bending the frames recently. Of course now that means I have to purchase new eyeglasses in the near future.

I don’t have insurance anymore, so I want to buy a relatively cheap pair of glasses that not only get the job done, but also look good in the process. I was searching through the OpticsPlanet website earlier and was surprised to see that they carry a pretty big selection of eyeglasses. I’ve always known that OpticsPlanet is the place to go to for telescopes, sport goggles, and sunglasses, but I didn’t realize that they offered reading glasses, bifocals, and other prescription glasses as well.

I’m going to spend more time looking through the selection of eyeglasses on OpticsPlanet to see if I can find a good pair. I only need my glasses when I’m driving at night (which I don’t do very often to begin with), so I’ve got some time to shop around. Hopefully I’ll come across a great new pair right on the site and save myself a trip out to the store!

More Controversy for Moore

I have never been a fan of filmmaker Michael Moore. It’s not only that I don’t agree with his take on the issues that he chooses to cover, it’s also the fact that people have proven time and time again that he is less than forthcoming about certain things. For example, he helps bolster his stance by editing interviews to come off in the way he wants rather than in the spirit the speaker intended his or her words to be taken. Furthermore, he sometimes entirely omits crticial footage if that will help his cause even more.

Now it appears that Moore is even more of a jerk than I thought. According to an AP article by Kristy Lemire, Moore wouldn’t grant an interview request to two filmmakers who were creating a documentary about him. His “people” (yes, apparently he’s gone completely Hollywood) blew off the filmmakers and never let them get close. The kicker is that they were pro-Moore and probably would have made him look good.

Instead, the filmmakers decided to focus on Moore’s tactics and address recurring allegations that he did, in fact, sit down with former GM head honcho Roger Smith but deliberately chose to leave that footage out of Roger & Me to further his message.

I can’t say that I’m surprised that Moore doesn’t have the time of day for anyone else. I don’t think he would ever want to put himself in the position that he often puts his interview subjects in, which is to be completely at the mercy of someone else’s arbitrary editing whims.

Hunger and Other Stories by Ian Randall Wilson
Filed under Entertainment

I am an avid reader, but I don’t pick up as many works from contemporary writers as I would like to. I’ve always had an affinity for the classics, so any reading time I have is usually devoted to stuff that would usually be read in a high school or college lit class. Recently, however, I heard about a short story collection called Hunger and Other Stories by Ian Randall Wilson and even had the opportunity to sample a couple of tales.

The first story I read was called “The Wire Man”, but I have to admit that I never really became interested in the plot. The main theme seemed to be the relationship between a grown man and his father, which is certainly a worthy topic to explore, but I just couldn’t get into the whole machine shop/toymaking environment in which the story took place.

After a bit of searching on the Internet, I came across another of Wilson’s stories called “Sometimes Rest is Always Good”. I actually enjoyed that story a great deal. I’ve spent a lot of time in Japan and appreciated the way Wilson described Phil’s interactions with Mr. Saito. I found these scenes to be spot-on, and this attention to detail immediately drew me into the story and kept me riveted until the end.

After reading “Sometimes Rest is Always Good”, I wouldn’t mind giving some of Wilson’s other stories a try. Maybe I’ll even order his short story collection the next time I buy a bunch of books from Amazon.com!
