I’ve never watched an entire soccer game in my life, but I do know who David Beckham is. Actually, I first heard of him in connection with that Bend It Like Beckham movie starring Keira Knightley — not because of Manchester United, Real Madrid, or his marriage to Posh Spice.
I heard a couple days ago that Beckham is coming to the U.S. to play for the L.A. Galaxy in the MLS. His total compensation package is supposed to be upwards of $250 million, which includes endorsements plus salary. How is the team or the league going to afford that? I have no idea. I don’t even particularly care, really, but the sports media seem to be trying to hype this up.
I read a profile of Beckham over on ESPN.com, and I felt it gave me a good primer on the guy. I’m not going to turn into a soccer fan or anything, but Beckham’s signing will probably lead to excellent exposure for the league.
