Foonz for Conference Calls

Last night was one of those rare Friday nights that I actually spent out at the bars with my friends. Outings of that sort have been few and far between for me ever since I had my son nearly four years ago.

Anyway, I’d all but forgotten how difficult it can be to coordinate a night out on the town for a group of nine people who are coming from different locations. A few people arrived at the right place on time, but we were still waiting on five others — which was a majority of our group. We of course had cell phones with us, but it was a total nightmare trying to contact each of the five late arrivals to get updates about where they were and when they expected to get to the right bar.

At some point during the night, one of my friends mentioned a free new service called Foonz (pronounced like “phones”). Foonz allows people to make conference calls from any telephone (cell, pay phone, residential phone, etc.) without any additional fees or intrusive ads. I’d never heard of it before, but I made a point to check it out today after I woke up.

Apparently, all you have to do is sign up for free at the foonz web site and set up your group lists. Then, when you want to make a conference call, you dial into Foonz first. Foonz notifies all the people on your group list that you want to have a conference call, and then as they dial in, they’ll be connected to your call.

I think Foonz sounds like a fantastic service and I’m definitely going to join. I can think of many uses for Foonz in addition to the group scenario outing I wrote about above, so I’m sure I’ll get plenty of use out of my account. If you’re in my regular group of friends, you can expect to hear much more about this from me very soon!

Nintendo Wii Released in Japan

Nintendo Wii Video Game SystemThe Nintendo Wii was released in Japan today, and as expected, the company experienced very strong sales. I was surprised to learn that the Wii was released in the U.S. first because it’s usually the other way around with these game systems.

We already have several game systems, so I don’t think we’ll be purchasing the Wii anytime soon. But I took a look at the description anyway and have to say that this sounds like a pretty neat product. The controller is motion-sensitive, which makes it particularly useful for sports games. So if you’re playing a tennis game, for example, you’d be able to move your arm in a backhand motion or whatever and have your movements replicated on the screen. The Wii sounds like it is much more family-friendly than the PS3 or Xbox 360, so keep that in mind if you’re planning on buying a system for Christmas.

Free Medical Drug Reference Site

My uncle had a mild heart attack about two months ago, which was of course a very scary thing. He’s not even 50 years old yet and I always thought he was in pretty good health. Fortunately, it looks like he’ll be fine, provided that he changes his lifestyle and keeps taking the drugs presribed by his doctor.

One of the pills he takes regularly is called Plavix. I’d never heard of that one before, so I looked it up on the Internet to try to get some information about it. As I was doing so, I found Epocrates.com, which is a free drug reference site that can be used by both clinicians and patients alike. I was truly impressed by the amount of information Epocrates had about Plavix: everything from potential adverse reactions to approximate retail price. Epocrates even had a picture of Plavix pills so people can be sure they’re taking the right thing.

All in all, I felt Epocrates was a great site. Be sure to check it out the next time you want to gather info about a prescription drug!

Home Appraisals Online

I’ve blogged several times before about how my husband and I are thinking about moving to a different area. Well, one of the first steps we need to take is to get our home appraised so we can settle on a fair asking price. Of course, we were under the impression that we would have to find a certified appraiser, make an appointment, and pay a fee to get this done. But that’s actually not necessary at all, thanks to websites like eppraisal.com.

Eppraisal.com is a simpler, easier way for people to get a quick appraisal of their home. All I had to do was enter my street address and zip code on the eppraisal.com site, and I received an estimated house value in a matter of seconds. Although I know we’ll likely need to get a certified appraisal once we’re ready to list our home, the eppraisal.com estimate provides us with a good starting point.

This is a handy site to know about, so check it out!

Modified Japanese Van

I was in Japan a couple months ago and saw this monstrosity of a van in a mall parking lot. It’s actually not unusual to see vans modded out like this, but they usually look a hell of a lot better than this one. I think the color scheme is what ruins it all. I mean, it is just UGLY!! I would never drive anything like it under any circumstances!
