Last night was one of those rare Friday nights that I actually spent out at the bars with my friends. Outings of that sort have been few and far between for me ever since I had my son nearly four years ago.
Anyway, I’d all but forgotten how difficult it can be to coordinate a night out on the town for a group of nine people who are coming from different locations. A few people arrived at the right place on time, but we were still waiting on five others — which was a majority of our group. We of course had cell phones with us, but it was a total nightmare trying to contact each of the five late arrivals to get updates about where they were and when they expected to get to the right bar.
At some point during the night, one of my friends mentioned a free new service called Foonz (pronounced like “phones”). Foonz allows people to make conference calls from any telephone (cell, pay phone, residential phone, etc.) without any additional fees or intrusive ads. I’d never heard of it before, but I made a point to check it out today after I woke up.
Apparently, all you have to do is sign up for free at the foonz web site and set up your group lists. Then, when you want to make a conference call, you dial into Foonz first. Foonz notifies all the people on your group list that you want to have a conference call, and then as they dial in, they’ll be connected to your call.
I think Foonz sounds like a fantastic service and I’m definitely going to join. I can think of many uses for Foonz in addition to the group scenario outing I wrote about above, so I’m sure I’ll get plenty of use out of my account. If you’re in my regular group of friends, you can expect to hear much more about this from me very soon!
